OUTLINE
【概要】

A press conference was held in Tokyo on July 15th to announce the newest Gundam series: Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS, premiering at 5:00 PM October 4th on MBS, TBS, and 26 other local affiliates.

 The series will take the closest-ever look in Gundam’s 35-year history at the bonds and clashes between its protagonists and the drama of their growth to adulthood, telling the story of a band of young boys and the changes their own maturation spurs in the “Gundam”.

Led by Anohana director Tatsuyuki Nagai and written by Mari Okada, IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS will feature an all-star staff of mechanical design by Naohiro Washio, Kanetake Ebikawa, Ippei Gyoubu, Kenji Teraoka, and Tamotsu Shinohara, with character concepts by Yu Ito designed for animation by Michinori Chiba and music by Masaru Yokoyama.

STORY
【あらすじ】

It is a world roughly three hundred years after the end of a great conflict known as the “Calamity War”.

The Earth Sphere lost its previous system of government and a new world was built with a new ruling system. While a transient peace had come, the embers of a new conflict was born on Mars, far removed from Earth.

The main character, a young boy named Mikazuki Augus, belongs to the civilian security company Chryse Guard Security (CGS). He is tasked with guarding Cuderia Aina Bernstein, a young girl who is trying to make the Martian city of Chryse independent from the rule of one of Earth’s powers.  However, when the elite Gjallarhorn unit, charged with suppressing revolutionaries, raids CGS, its higher-ups deliberately use Mikazuki and the other boys as a decoy to cover their own retreat. The leader of the boys, Orga Itsuka, takes advantage of this occasion to rise in revolt against the adults who oppressed them and stages a coup d’etat.  With orders from Orga to hold back Gjallarhorn, Mikazuki sorties in Calamity War-era scrap that CGS had been using as a generator—the Gundam Barbatos…

Mikazuki belongs to the private security company CGS, at the Martian city of Chryse, which has been hired to escort a girl named Kudelia to Earth. But just as preparations for departure are underway, Gjallarhorn attacks CGS in an attempt on Kudelia’s life.

Thanks to Mikazuki and the Gundam Barbatos, Orga’s group has temporarily repulsed Gjallarhorn, though not without many sacrifices. As they are discussing their next move, one of Gjallarhorn’s Graze mobile suits again appears at the CGS base.

TIMELINE
【年表】

■ P.D.0001 The nations of Earth and Mars accept the Vingolf Proclamation issued by Gjallarhorn. The interplanetary war that has spread destruction through the Earth Sphere and the Outer Sphere comes to an end. This conflict, which has produced more casualties than any in history, is described in the proclamation as the “Calamity War” and is thereafter known by that name. With the cooperation of Gjallarhorn, Earth is organized into four economic blocs in order to reconstruct the devastated Earth Sphere. These are the African UNion, the Oceanian Federation, SAU and Arbrau. Earth begins its post-war recovery under this new world order.

■ P.D.0002 At the “Malta Conference,” the four economic blocs conclude a treaty to divide and rule Mars. At their request, Gjallarhorn dispatches a large force to recreate the Martian governmental structure from scratch.

■ P.D.0003 Gjallahorn redraws Mars’s national borders, and each city is placed unde the control of one of Earth’s economic blocs. The four economic force to recreate the Martian governmental structure from scratch blocs begin wholeheartedly interfering in Martian affairs, and Mars enters a lengthy colonial period.

■ P.D.0205 Arbrau’s government grants limited autonomy to its Martian territories.

■ P.D.0208 The Oceanian Federation also recognizes the autonomy of its Martian territories.

■ P.D.0236 Last of all, the African Union also recognizes Martian autonomy. However, as Mars remains subject to hars economic agreements, it is in fact entering an era of puppet governments.

■ P.D.0312 On mars, a movement begins to protest economic disparities with Earth.

■ P.D.0314 In her speech at the “Noachis July Assembly,” Kudelia Ain Bernstein calls for economic independence from Earth, and cooperative movements emerge in every city.

Mikazuki Augus: A member of the Martian private security firm CGS. Calm and collected, with a head for the big picture, he’s undyingly loyal to his friends. The most experienced mobile weapon operator in CGS, he is assigned to pilot the Gundam Barbatos.

Orga Itsuka: A leader among the boys of CGS. Naturally gifted as a commander, and trusted implicitly by the others, he strives to live up to their admiration. He’s especially close to Mikazuki, who he’s known since avery young age; their bond is closer than most blood brothers. His coup within CGS is launched to give the boys a place where they won’t be betrayed anymore.

Biscuit Griffon: A boy who takes on the role of strategic advisor to Orga. Mild-mannered, his favorite hobby is reading. He enlists in CGS in order to support his grandmother and younger twin sister. Having attended school, he is literate—a rarity among the boys.

Eugene Sevenstark: A boy member of CGS, and the leader of the boys until Orga joined. While physically and intellectually gifted, his impulsiveness renders him somewhat unlikable. Unhappy at having his position usurped by Orga, he begins to nurture a grudge.

Akihito Altland: The leader of a separate group of boys sold to CGS as “human debris”, he’s cold, withdrawn, and cliquish. Often takes on risky front-line missions. His piloting skills are second only to Mikazuki’s.

Norba Shino: A high-spirited boy member of CGS. His robust build makes him a natural at hand-to-hand combat.

Danji Eirei: Member of the Third Group. Aspires to be a hero to save his friends. He goes out in a mobile worker and charges the Gjallarhorn forces before his unit is taken out by a Graze.

Nadi Yukinojou Kassapa: A man the group lovingly call “Old Man”. He’s an old timer that seems to know a lot about the Barbatos and aides in getting the unit ready for combat against the Gjallarhorn when they attack their facilities. Often seen with a cigarette, he has a metal leg.

CHRYSE GUARD SECURITY

Maruba Arkay: President of CGS. A shrewd man who cares about nothing other than saving his own hide when the Gjallarhorn attack their facilities. His whereabouts are currently unknown.

Haeda Gunnel: The presidents right hand man and leader of CGS’s First Corps. When Gjallarhorn attack their facilities, he flees with the president and other members of his team. Following the battle, he returns with the group and tries to take command of Third Group. However, as the Third Group is serving them food, they fall victim to their scheme and fall asleep after eating. When they awake, they are found to be tied up. Unable to accept the situation at hand, Haeda attempts to stand up to Orga and Mika only to be shot dead by him.

Todo Mirconen: A chubby man with a mustache. He’s in charge of a group of boys laying mines in the fields near the CGS facilities.

CHRYSE AUTONOMOUS GOVERNMENT

Norman Bernstein: Prime Minister of the Chryse government. He gives his daughter the important task as the mediator with Earth. He meets with Gjallarhorn in hopes of getting them to help her with her mission, though he is really just selling out his daughter.

Tomomi Bernstein: Mother of Kudelia and second wife of Norman Bernstein, the prime minister of the Chryse government.

Kudelia Aina Bernstein: The daughter of Norman Bernstein, who represents Mars’s Chryse Autonomous Region. Her mother is Norman’s second wife, Tomomi Bernstein. She has an excellent academic record, majoring in history and economics. In her second year, she visited Noachis as a representative of Chryse College, and made a speech calling for cooperation between the various regions seeking independence. After this Noachis July Assembly, the independence movements were stirred up, and she gained many followers among them. 

Fumitan Admos: Kudelia’s assistant.

MARTIAN CITY CHRYSE

Atra Mixta: A girl who works at a grocery in the city of Chryse. By delivering food to CGS, she has become friends with the CGS boys. In particular, she has slight crush on Mikazuki.

Haba: A young woman who owns her own grocery store in Chryse. She sends Atra to deliver supplies to CGS.

GJALLARHORN

McGillis Fareed: A young but capable Gjallarhorn Specialist Major who visits the Martian headquarters for an inspection. He is also an excellent pilot, and has his own Schwalbe Graze.

Gaelio Bauduin: A Gjallarhorn Specialist Major who accompanies McGillis as an escort. An excellent pilot, he has a Schwalbe Graze that is customized for his personal use.

Ein Dalton: A young officer assigned to Gjallarhorn’s Martian branch. Rank is 2nd Lieutenant. He pilots a Graze. His first mission is to accompany Crank and Orlis during their attack on the CGS facilities.

Crank Zent: A veteran officer assigned to Gjallarhorn’s Martian branch. Rank is Lieutenant. He pilots a Graze. He is forced to play the role of subordinate to his former pupil Orlis in a mission to attack the CGS facilities. After being ordered to capture Kudelia by his commanding officer, Coral, he returns to CGS and challenges them to a duel. Mikazuki accepts the offer and battles him. He is overpowered by the Barbatos and as his battle damaged unit lay on the ground, he asks Mika to put an end to his life as he is unable to. Mika complies and shoots him twice.

Orlis Stenja: Rank is Captain. He pilots a Graze Commander type. A brash officer who expects nothing but perfection on the battlefield, he charges onto the scene after his mobile worker forces are unable to gain control of the CGS facilities they were attacking. His unit comes under attack from the Gundam Barbatos following its launch from a secret location and is killed in action.

Coral Conrad: Commander of the Martian Branch control office. He meets with Norman Bernstein at their Stationary Orbital Base Ares. Rank is major.
